CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY

Concordia in Prague 2019: The Exhibition

Exploring Montreal’s landscape through its stories. Stories of its past, present and future. Stories  of its patterns, shapes and colors. And stories of its people that shape the city with what they bring to it. Their ideas, their experience and the way they reclaim the space for themselves and give it an identity. As an example, Amélie Charbonneau, Charles Gao, Abigail Stushnoff, Anna Toneguzzi and Aude Vallerand decided to cast light on the mysterious story of Juliette Trolio, proprietor of Rix Rax: a hidden gem full of vintage curiosities and fashion novelties.

Other participating students are Tiffanie Boffa, Kun Day, Anna Doumet, Mélodie Goulet, Oliver Herman, Indigo Danielson, Julie Fournier, Nasrine Khairi-Arancibia, Marcio Vinicius Paulino Silveira, Youchen Zhang

Concordia in Prague 2019: The Performance-Installation

Mimesis

By Fady Joudah

My daughter wouldn’t hurt a spider

That had nested

Between her bicycle handles

For two weeks

She waited

Until it left of its own accord

If you tear down the web I said

It will simply know

This isn’t a place to call home

And you’d get to go biking

She said that’s how others

Become refugees isn’t it?

The Department of Theatre is uniquely embedded within Concordia’s Faculty of Fine Arts, which has a long history as one of the premiere sites in Canada for the study and creation of the arts and arts-based scholarship, an is situated within the rich fabric of a research university.

We offer a BFA with a choice of three Specializations: Acting for the Theatre, Design for the Theatre and Canadas’s first undergraduate degree in Performance Creation. We also offer a Minor in Theatre. Our nationally and internationally recognized faculty members frequently collaborate with colleagues across the university and beyond in supervising student undertaking research and studies within Concordia’s Individualized MA/PHD and the Interdisciplinary Humanities PHD.

Each of our BFA programs is designed to train you as a practitioner, and to prepare you for entry into professional work or for graduate studies.

Acting for the Theatre will train you to be a highly capable, adaptable performer with skills applicable to many forms and genres of contemporary theatre and live performance. Design for the Theatre invites you to become actively involved in the complex process of conceiving, communicating, and realizing visual material, and spatial framewords for theatrical and other performing arts productions. The newly created BFA Specialization in Performance Creation supports emerging artists who seek interdisciplinary knowledge and performance training. In this program you will be introduced to theatre history, the crafts of directing, playwriting, dramaturgy, and a series of hybrid seminar-studio courses on practices such as oral history and performance, Indigenous storytelling, and studies in gender and sexuality in performance, as well as to methods for creating socially-engaged, collective, and interdisciplinary performance projects.

Our Department distinguishes itself by providing a healthy balance of rigour and flexibility, allowing students opportunities to study in areas complementary to their primary focus. Beyond our array of studio and seminar classes, we offer a variety of enrichment activities including international theatre-study exchanges to sites in Europe, Asia and North America, and supervised internships with prominent organizations in the local and national landscape.

APATHY A devised creation. Concordia University – Winter 2019

We began building templates of the play we wanted to work on. We tried improvisation, argued, watched playback from world news such as the Christine Ford testimony, argued, read book excerpts and articles and staged inspired by compositions from some of them, and argued, saw plays together, argued, looked at cartoons, newspapers, shared poetry… and…. Started to focus. We did real interviews with the public and our families to find out their thoughts on Apathy. We spent weeks in our writer room talking about the direction of the play. We found characters. We found words. We found more questions than answers.” J. Carmichael

The Learned Ladies by Molière, Concordia University – Winter 2019

“When I was faced with the amazing offer to direct Molière at Concordia, I suddenly stumbled across an aspect that I hadn’t addressed or focused on earlier. Something literally exploded in my face: the pervasive misogyny of his time reflected throughout his life’s work. As a proud feminist, I had to chat with my old friend Molière inside my head. Every play had some elements that made me clench my teeth, yet his brilliance as a writer painting human nature, pulled me in vigorously. I decided to face the challenge with glee and I chose The Learned Ladies because it made fun of all, as well as carrying a very important topic dear to my heart.” N. Claude

ADAPTATION

The Freddy Stories an adaptation from the Illustrated Novel by Lynda Barry, Concordia University – Fall 2017

“The undertaking of this adaptation has been a gorgeous display of great courage, goodwill, and collective collaboration. We started as readers and novice puppeteers, and each brought their tool bag of creativity capacities to the rehearsal room. We have found out who likes to draw, dance, sing, paint, sew, edit, make lists, and of course, make theatre. In only six weeks, we made it through the story, we fell in love with the characters, and before you we will bring them to life.” C. Minaker

Rinse. Wash. Repeat.  A collective creation produced following an Exchange Program between the Institut für Theater und Medienwissenschaft of Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen (Germany) and the Concordia University’s Department of Theatre

Concordia University – Fall 2017

“Looking back at the past that brought us here, we recognize cycles. How do we acknowledge and challenge these recurring patterns of humanity to navigate the present, while maintaining an awareness of our trace on the future? In a world with a past filled with violence and lack of communication, a new history can only begin when the old has been interrogated. As products of the old world, we attempt to shake it, and force ourselves to find new means of communication beyond the limiting language and structures we have depended upon.” The company
