Our Installation at PQ (06/14/2019)
Keeping with the theme of transition, we wanted to build and change our installation throuought the day, creating a space throughout the day that would encourage visitors to move in and around the exhibit and provide a more tactile experience. We took inspiration from found and natural materials, allowing the exhibit to form and shift depending on the qualities of the materials.
BFA THEATRE DESIGN
The University of Alberta offers conservatory-style training in Theatre Design. The program offers students the opportunity to train as Theatre Designers and, upon graduation, to work in the field as professionals and theatre artists. Our graduates go on to work in film, television, dance and opera in addition to theatre. The program offers young artists the chance to develop their own voice and acquire the skills necessary to express that voice; it offers students the opportunity to hone skills necessary in adjacent fields such as architecture, interior design, video-game design and concept design.
The program is taught holistically and focus is given to the four main elements of Scenography- Set, Costumes, Lighting and Media Design. Our graduates have practiced the art of performance design in every major theatre in Canada as well as Theatres in the USA and in Europe. You’ll have multiple opportunities to showcase your work, on our stages, as well as at our annual Portfolio Show and U Alberta’s exhibit at the Prague Quadrennial, the world’s largest event dedicated to performance design.

GRADUATE PROGRAMS
We endeavor to foster in students a unique combination of practical and critical skills, with an adventurous, visionary attitude. Students are stimulated to examine the nature of theatre itself – its form and content. Our goal is to challenge our students to think independently, to develop their innate qualities of resourcefulness, innovation and imagination. We value leadership.
Our graduate students assume key leadership roles on the creative teams which plan and realize the many productions presented in the department and are well prepared to take on leadership roles when they graduate. Our department features live performance as the site of interaction and integration of all aspects of the discipline of theatre; all graduate students participate in this culture of research and creative activity. A lively interplay between programs enriches the student experience beyond the scope of any one program.
